Japanese Band Concert
The organizer of NBC invited Japan's Aichi Meidan High School Band to Singapore as a guest band. They had a "concert" as a closing ceremony of NBC..
my impression of Japanese band was good.. but i did not expected such a wonderful performance from them... the start few songs were very soothing and relaxing as they were some symphonic songs.. after those songs we went for an interval. when the interval was over they started to play pop songs.. it really got the crowd going wild... screaming, cheering, clapping... the atmosphere was like those star singer's concert.. although it was already very late but i just got a feeling that only 1 hour passed... after they performed all thier songs, we requested an encore.. so the conductor came back in and conducted them... all in all they did 4 encores for us.... as a fellow band member i noe how tiring it is to perform on stage n doing all those gimmicks. for a brass player, our lips will give way as it gets tired and thus unable to play well.. but they were great.. even though they played the same pieces afew times, we enjoyed it..
i envy my friend who is currently studying in Meridian JC as they are the host for the Japan band.. they even get to have a performance together the night before the closing ceremony.. how i wish ITE would have such a chance...
even though the ticket is $20.. i still find thier performance worth much more than that.. if they were to have thier own concert here in singapore, i am even willing to pay $50 to watch it.. even though they all are the same age as me.. but i feel that thier standards are way higher than mine... if a person the same age as me could be that good... y cant i? thus i must work hard.
after watching the Japan band perform i made a promise to myself. which is to go japan and watch a concert over there... i'm sure it would be an enjoyable n worthwhile concert..

National Band Competition
Nation Band Competition or what we call the NBC is taken place same year as the syf outdoor. this year, it is the 2nd time they had NBC first NBC was held during 2006. back in 2006 i joined NBC in my secondary school back than it was a close call as we barely got a silver our score was 70.1%. the award r giving as such :gold with distinction >85.00%, gold 80.00%-84.99%, silver 70.00%-79.99%, bronze 60.00%-69.99%, Certificate Of Participation 50.00%-59.99% , certificate of merit <49.99%.
this year's judging was not really that strict as most band got silver and up.. no band got bronze or below.. we took months to prepare for this event. 3 months before the event, our conductor say only 5 members from my section is needed when there are 7 of us.. so my section leader's first idea was 2 take only the seniors as there are 4 seniors and 3 juniors. but after awhile he asked me to play as well.. so that make me the only junior in my section to perform. at first i did not really want to as i know the other 2 juniors are better than me... but still i was choosen.. so this makes me work extra harder as i dint want to fail the 2 other juniors and my seniors expectation..
about 1 month before the competition some of us was not really very confident about our band n said we could not make it.. but our conductor,Mr Eric Watson, encouraged us and even when we made mistakes on our playing he corrected us patiently.
finally the big day has arrived.. all of us was so nervous.. before we go up on stage to perform we had to go into the "tuning room" where we tune our instrument n do last minute warm up and some practice.. we were only given 10 min to be in there... when we waited outside for the band before us to leave the room, we heard them play. all our jaws dropped.. thier playing was so nice.. and we started to panic... my senior who was standing beside me was like "OH MY GOD!!" so i calmed her down by saying "just imagine you are listening to the recording of the song". so after they left we went in sat down and done our warm up and all.. so we went 2 the backstage to prepare 2 go on stage.. the moment i step out of the backstage my heart sunk.. i was so nervous that i could not even play properly... but however i recovered along the way... i just cant overcome stage fright.. but we were happy about our performance.. some of us left the stage crying while others looking happy n laughing along the way...
we got back to school packed our instrument and went back to watch the remaining bands to perform and FINALLY... the results... the first 3 bands before us all got gold.. and when its our turn... they announced "Institude Of Technical Education................ With a score of 79.17%.. SILVER!" we burst our in screams... while other bands gave us the look like telling us "you guys only got silver yet you guys scream so loud..." that was the feeling i got from thier looks.. but we were happy... we were less than 1% away from gold and yet it was the first time ITE concert band took part in a competition. we were happy yet sad at the same time actually.. as we were so close to what we wanted.. yet we could not get it.. but overall we were happy and we aim to do better for our year end concert.
This was the certificate we got.
this picture was taken before our competition while we waited outside VCH
This picture was taken after our competition with our conductor Mr Eric Watson
i learnt that sometimes it is not the results that counts.. it is the process. when we think back of all the practice we had during our holiday or normal practice times, the hard work we put in together, the times when we corrected each other's mistakes, the time we felt nervous together, the time we encourage each other... all those are really memoriable and that feeling is not easy to forget.
silver result but gold memories..

Working at Sakae Sushi
during November last year, after my N lvls i thought of find a job. and so coincidentally my sister's boyfriend who works at Sakae Sushi asked me if i would like to work there... so i went for interview... the first time i went to White Sand's outlet.. but sad to say i was rejected... but i nvr gave up i went to the one at Habour Front 2 weeks later.. and i was glad i was hired.. i was assigned 2 work at Parkway.
First day of work... the day which i should leave a good impression... but i was late... sometimes when you want something so badly that you cant get it... i waited for a cab for half an hour.. but non showed up... by the time i got onto a cab i was already late... but however the stuff there was kind.. learned lots of stuff and found it fun to work..
As time pass maybe like 1 or 2 weeks later, more part timer joined cos O lvled ended. at first we are not really that close.. but after a few break time together we got really close.. when we got scolded by customers we would go into the kitchen and talk it out and all.. sometimes the customers are really too much till even the supervisors cannot take it..
There was once i served this customer.. he ordered a curry katsu don.. so when i served him he pointed down to the don and said "i want 2 more.." so i replied "2 more?" than he said "yes 2 more.." so i stupidly took it as he wanted 2 more curry katsu don instead of 2 more spoon... so i went n ordered it.... when the kitchen's done with it.. i send to them... and he started to scold me... so i went back to the kitchen and apologised to the cook and all.. my manager saw and she just threw the 2 bowl of rice away... what a waste... if only i could eat it... haha.. so from there i learnt my mistake.. later part of the day my colleague walk passed me he said "you know wat? i almost did the same mistake as you... lucky i double check to see if they wanted 2 more spoon or 2 more rice" we had a good laugh at the end of the day..
At first i thought that i would not be so tough to work... but after awhile i realize working really made me really tired and have no time for anytime to go out with friends or to use computer.. during my off day i would be spending it sleeping or resting instead of doing any other thing. after a few months theres are thought in my head such as "another day at work... so sian.." or "my life is so lifeless.. wake up, go work, end work,go home, sleep and repeat cycle" but managed to stay working all the way till school starts.. i tried working and schooling at the same time but i just could not take it.. monday to saturday i would b going sch.. and last day for resting i am working from morning till night.. after 1 month i could not take it anymore so i quited..
Although my time working at sakae was short but i feel that working there made me see how tough it is to be in the service line, how customers can be very demanding sometimes, how to handle stuff even when it seems impossible.

Syf Outdoor band performance
Syf Outdoor Band performance is taken place 1 year after the indoor performance.. in this event there are 2 types of category the 'display band' and the 'assesment of marching bands'.
Starting off the event was the 'assesment of marching bands' in this event band are judged by how proper thier marching and playing of the music are.. it is quite a tough thing to play an instrument while marching as you cannot look at the music scores and thus need to memorise it... and thats not all... while marching they also need to take note of thier dressings and all thus they must be able to do all those together... although this event was not the main highlights that everyone was looking out for, but it got the crowd's spirit up..
next up, the 'display band' event.. in this event the band are judged by how they interprete the theme of that year and show it through music n formation.. the challenge here is much high as band need to play instrument and "perform" at the same time. there are some really good bands...
this here is the video of Deyi Secondary School Band.. they are the overall winning of the event. once u watched the performance u would understand what i meant.. they got the crowds cheering n excited. it was a totally awsome performance.

and here we have the Tanjong Katong Secondary School Band.. it was a close battle between tkss and dyss. this 2 schools are the main bands that the crowd are looking forward to as they did excellent performances for last few SYFs.. from the sound of the crowd cheering you can feel how popular they were..
overall the performance was great and it was an unforgettable event.. the effort they put in must be great or else they would not have such a great performance.. it is hard for them to juggle between indoor and outdoor as they take place 1 year after another thus making it even more challenging.
in my secondary school days i enjoyed marching and playing instrument at the same time as it was fun.. but also tough at the same time.. marching under the hot sun makes u wear out quickly plus playing the instrument.. the way of playing instrument indoor and outdoor are different.. in outdoor, more air need to be used as the sound cant be projected. where as in indoor lesser air is needed as the sound will bounce off the wall.. sometimes other uniform group thinks that what we do are easier than thiers but in actual fact band is much tougher than what they think. for major events we have to memorise different songs for different uniform group to march in and out and we had to march out while playing our march out piece as well..
marching is a tough thing to do with instrument but however with the will to do it, we can do it.
